Srila Prabhupad Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Goswami Thakur

Revolutionary Spiritual Reformer, Renowned Gaudiya Vaishnava Theologian and Scholar, Founder of the Gaudiya Math Institution, Guardian of Pure Devotion (Bhakti), Author and Commentator on Vedic Spirituality

Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati, also known as Srila Prabhupad, was an extraordinary personality. Many recognised him as a proficient astrologer, while others acknowledged him as a distinguished scholar. Some perceived him as an eminent theologian and philosopher. However, his personality was even more exceptional and complex, and his profound impact is yet to be fully appreciated by the world.

He was born in the family of Bhakti Vinod Thakur and received the name Bimal Prasad Datta. His exceptional qualities and spiritual potential were evident from a young age. By the age of nine, he had memorised all 700 verses of the Bhagavad Gita, showcasing his remarkable memory and dedication to learning.

At just 12 years old, Bimal Prasad was already proofreading articles, poetry, and book reviews for his father’s monthly magazine, Sajjana-toshani. His razor-sharp intelligence and memory power were so remarkable that he could recall verses and passages, verbatim, from any book he read just once.

At 13, Bimal Prasad enrolled at Vidyasagar College (then known as Calcutta Metropolitan Institution), where his studies included Sanskrit, mathematics, and astrology. His deep understanding and proficiency in astrology earned him the title “Siddhanta Saraswati.”

By the age of 21, Bimal Prasad became the secretary and historian of Bir Chandra Manikya, the king of Tripura. He later tutored the princes at the palace. At 24, he founded the Saraswata Chatuspathi Sanskrit school, where many highly educated scholars came to study under his guidance.

Bimal Prasad traveled extensively with his father from the north to the south of India, immersing himself in the teachings of Ramanuja and Madhava. Bhakti Vinod Thakur, recognising his profound interest in Vaishnava philosophy, honoured him with the title “bhakti” in his name, making him known as “Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati”.

Inspired by the Chaitanya’s teachings, Bimal Prasad dedicated himself to spreading the glory of Holy Name worldwide, as he sincerely believed that chanting of the Holy Name was the most effective way to attain salvation from all our struggles.

To be a genuine preacher, Bimal Prasad believed in the importance of possessing exemplary qualities. He committed to chanting 300,000 Holy Names daily, with the goal of chanting one billion Holy Names. However, after the passing of his father and his spiritual master, Srila Gaura Kisor Das Babaji Maharaj, Bimal Prasad initially withdrew from the idea of preaching and chose a life of seclusion. It was then that Chaitanya appeared to him and instructed him to share the message of divine love and devotion throughout the world.

To fulfil the will of Chaitanya, in 1918, Bimal Prasad accepted the renounced order of life, also known as sannyas, and became known as Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati. But, nevertheless, everyone respectfully addressed him as Srila Prabhupad, as his behaviour in everything was ideal and personified the teachings of Chaitanya.

During this period, he established his first preaching centre, Chaitanya Math, in the sacred abode of Sri Dham Mayapur. His profound teachings and unwavering dedication to spiritual truths drew many seekers and inspired them on their spiritual journey. He urged everyone to aim for eternal bliss and go back home, back to Godhead.

Srila Prabhupad’s tireless efforts to spread the Loving Message of Chaitanya and devotion sparked a spiritual revolution. Many highly educated young people, deeply moved by his wisdom, joined his mission and helped set up 64 Gaudiya Math centres in India and beyond.

Although Srila Prabhupad left this mortal world on January 1, 1937, his spiritual legacy continues to guide and inspire countless souls on their path to divine love.
